Modeling of concentrations of copper biocides in Finnish ports - A comparative study of MAMPEC models in Finnish conditions.

Surfaces, such as a ship’s hull, immersed in sea water are quickly affected by fouling from marine organisms such as barnacles and algae. This leads to an increased friction between the hull and the water, which in turn affects the ship's speed and fuel consumption negatively. The most common strategy to prevent fouling on ships is to coat the vessel’s hull with an antifouling paint, which usually contain and leach toxic biocides to the marine environment. To assess the impact of the antifouling paint on the marine environment, a modeling program called MAMPEC is used. Antifouling paints containing biocides are modeled in one of MAMPEC’s default ports, the OECD-model. MAMPEC calculates a PEC-value (Predicted Environmental Concentration) which is used to determine if the risk of using the antifouling paint is either acceptable or unacceptable. In Finland SYKE has developed their own MAMPEC-model known as Fin harbour, which is used in the risk assessment process of antifouling paints for the Finnish market. This report examines if the OECD-model and Fin harbour-model are representative for Finnish ports. Three different antifouling paints approved to be used on the Finnish market have been used in the modeling of Turku port and Hanko port; these were later compared with the OECD-model and the Fin harbour-model. The study concludes that the OECD-model is not a suitable model for risk assessments of antifouling paints to be used on the coast of Finland. The results also indicate that the Fin harbour-model and the Turku-model produce similar PEC-values which cannot be said for the Hanko-model where the PEC-values are significantly higher. This indicates that using the Fin harbour-model for risk assessment may cause underestimated concentrations of biocides in a few Finnish harbours.
