Detection of high-voltage power cables using electromagnetic sensing equipment on an excavator

Detection of underground power cables and their location is possible with the help of high quality sensors and a fine electronic signal chain combined with advanced detection algorithms. By designing a sensor solution capable to capture 0.1 μT of magnetic flux density it is possible for an algorithm to pinpoint the location and current of the conductors in the ground. In a lab environment the placement error was measured to 15 cm with a 13 A (RMS) current. The product developed in this thesis can help to create a safer, more accurate and easy to use method for detection of underground power cables.
