E2015:033, To be a powerful company in today’s manufacturing industry requires an organization and a production system that constantly evolves and updates itself. A lot of companies see Lean production as an opportunity to create a more efficient production system. This study is performed as a case study in a Swedish engineering company. The company is today troubled with long lead times and a flow of material that is hard to follow. This leads to difficulties whit the planning and it is hard to calculate how much an order will cost. A large amount of complicated orders in combination with lack of relevant monitoring makes it hard to get a grip of the factors that leads to the long lead times. The company also wishes to increase the efficiency in the production and in a further perspective reach a higher profitability. The management believes, that a development of the company in accordance of the principles in Lean production is the right way to go. The purpose with the study is to analyze the flow of products of the extrusion segment and, whit the principles of lean as a foundation give suggestions on how the flow could be more efficient in order to decrease the lead times. The study started with analyzes of literature to identify the most common factors leading to long lead times. With these factors as a foundation a case study in the production was performed. The case study showed that the most important lead time factors for the company to deal with are the planning, the way the work is organized, downtime and competence because these are the main factors that the company has possibilities to influence. The most important suggestions to improve the company are: Control of flow due to a system based on pulling, introducing of daily control, increased work requirements and also development of competence in the production.
