Energy calculations and production of solutions for thermal bridges using vacuum insulation panels

The purpose of this project was to improve upon the energy performance of buildings by using VIP (Vacuum Insulation Panels). This in order to meet the demands set by the European Union to decrease the energy usage for heating of buildings by 20 % by year 2020. This was done by examining thermal bridges in the building envelope. The ones chosen were; a curtain wall with a lean structural construction, the concrete infill wall in a lightweight steel-structure wall and the connection between a concrete structural constructions intermediate floor and main partition wall. The projects goal was to show the energy efficiency of VIP in comparison to other materials, to develop alternate constructions including VIP and compare them to the conventional ones. Our studies have been limited to working with simulations of these constructions in a 2-dimensional, steady state. Initially a literary study was conducted in order to evaluate the essential problems of thermal bridges, material properties and heat flow in the chosen structures. Thereafter alternate constructions, including VIP, were developed and modelled in collaboration with WSP group and several interviews with manufacturers for parts of the curtain wall and concrete infill wall. The heat flow studies were conducted in COMSOL Multiphysics. The results of the conventional, and the alternative construction show that improvement on the curtain wall were 14.5–44 % and 62–116 % for the concrete thermal bridges. In a test façade the performance improvements for the curtain wall were 3–11 % while 11–15 % for the concrete-steel-façade. Heat flow studies were compared in order to analyze and discuss the possibilities of applying these construction methods to the building sector and evaluate the possible energy performance improvements
