Healthcare organizations in Sweden are facing growing demands from the society while the demographics are changing. Increasing waiting times for patients as well as a tight budget have also become a rising issue. To solve these problems, prior research has focused on improving the patient flow in healthcare organizations by applying industry concepts to the process of diagnose and treatment of patients. Management processes within healthcare organizations that do not involve patients but need to be performed have however not been discussed in literature as much. This master’s thesis explores such processes in healthcare organizations by performing a case study at Skaraborg Hospital. The included eight chapters and seven appendixes present the master’s thesis and furthermore make it possible to continue to work with the gathered data. The master’s thesis at Skaraborg Hospital was initiated because the organization lacked documentation of the hospital’s facilities which prevents delegation of work environment tasks according to the Environmental Act. A mapping of Skaraborg Hospital, based on data from 61 questionnaires, has begun which has resulted in lists of facilities, where the facilities stated in the questionnaires are listed, and marked construction drawings, where the organizational subunits that have handed in the questionnaire are marked. Five principles have moreover been developed which are recommended to be used when delegating work environment tasks. Skaraborg Hospital is further recommended to have standardized routines regarding how to continuously improve the mapping and to delegate work environment tasks in written form as well as state what the tasks imply. While delegating the work environment tasks Skaraborg Hospital is also recommended to involve and include the employees by information and communication. The recommendations can be applied generally for healthcare organizations in need of delegating work environment tasks. It is concluded that the improvement of management processes within healthcare organizations should be conducted differently than for main processes since the objective often differs. When implementing changes in healthcare organizations the specific organizational culture within such organizations must furthermore be taken into account, where medical staff and administrational staff may have different perspectives on how to manage healthcare.
