Assessment of nautical competence - A comparative study of Swedish and Philippine final year students

The purpose of this study is to investigate if there are any differences in maritime competence between Swedish and Philippine final year students at the master marine programmes. If there are differences occurring, the aim is to connect these ti the different educational systems. In the study an extensive questionnaire has been used to assess possible differences in theoretical knowledge. It is built on multiple-chouce questions and comparable to a written test. The questionnaire has been distributed to the final year students at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden and the University of Cebu in Philippines. To control if there are any differences in practical skills a simulator study has been conducted at the same universities. The study involves three classes of students, one from Sweden and two from the philippines. Some Philippine students get sponsored, which involved extra education and integrated onboard training. The regular students do not have the same opportunities, which is the reason to why the two groups are study separately. Comparing the three groups, the actual meaning of competence between the two universities. However, the results cannot be considered to represent the entire two nations, due to the varying quality of institutions within the countries. I addition, it is obvious that the educational system does have an affect on the competence level, in what extent is hoeever difficult to conclude from the results of this thesis.
